How to use follow and nofollow links for SEO

Artículo en español

If you are a blogger or have a website, the distinction between follow and nofollow links has an influence on how your site ranks. It’s highly recommended to use them properly. Otherwise, Google may penalize your website. In this post I will explain the meaning of follow and nofollow links and how to use them right. Let’s get started!

Follow link: a link to another site/page that is tracked by search engines.

Nofollow link: a link that is dropped. That is to say, this link is not followed.

However, Google accepts that “in general, we don’t follow them”. This suggests that in some cases Google tracks this type of links. This is rather a controversial issue. It is supposed that a backlink from Wikipedia (all its links are nofollow) doesn't improve your ranking power. Google only knows!

How to use follow and nofollow links

Here are some tips that can be useful for your SEO and linkbuilding strategy:

- Mix follow and nofollow links in order to get a natural combination of links. Google may penalize websites with only one type of links.

- If you add an outgoing link to a site you don’t know well or that is untrustworthy, make it nofollow.

- Affiliate links and similar should be nofollow. In case you add follow links, the anchor text must be clear and precise.

- Use follow links only to related sites. For instance, if you blog on fashion, a link to a video game site should be nofollow.

- Follow links pass link juice, which is to say that your page rank flows to other sites. This doesn’t always mean a ranking leakage. If your home page has a high ranking, add internal links to other pages on your website. Internal links also make your site crawlable by users and search engines.

- Be careful with backlinks that can be considered spam. Inbound links from link farms, untrustworthy websites... can be harmful. Consequently, don’t leave links on that sort of sites. On the contrary, backlinks from relevant websites improve your ranking.

- Comments on most webs and blogs are supposedly nofollow. This measure was intended to prevent spam.

- Include keywords near follow links. It goes without saying that the website content should be related to those words.

- Follow links are more powerful when embedded in an article. Links at the top of the post pass more link juice that those located at the bottom.

- Remove redundant links from your website. Pay special attention to links on the sidebar and footer.

How to add a nofollow link

HTML

Nofollow is an HTML attribute. Let’s see it with an example, a link to Twitter:

Follow link

<a href="https://twitter.com/">Twitter</a>

Nofollow link

<a href=https://twitter.com/ rel="nofollow">Twitter</a>

If you want all links on a certain page to be nofollow, add this meta tag to that page:

<meta name="robots" content="nofollow">

Blogger

When you click on the link button, a popup will let you check the nofollow attibute.

Blogger checkbox nofollow attribute

Wordpress

Some useful plugins are Rel Nofollow Checkbox and Ultimate Nofollow.

Of course, whether you are using Blogger o Wordpress, you can manually add this attribute.

Conclusion

Common sense rules. Don't add follow links that you wouldn't click on. Always keep in mind that content is the king.

Enlace follow

<a href="https://twitter.com/">Twitter</a>

Enlace nofollow

<a href=https://twitter.com/ rel="nofollow">Twitter</a>

<meta name="robots" content="nofollow">

Blogger
